Shelby Coates is excited to call Spartanburg her new home. She joins the WSPA news team as a night side Reporter and weekend morning anchor.

Originally from Tennessee, Shelby spent many weekends traveling through the Carolina mountains to enjoy the state's beautiful beaches. So she jumped at the chance to continue her career in the Upstate area.

Shelby brings several years of experience to WSPA. She began her journalism career covering rodeos, river floods and polygamist ranch raids in West Texas as a Weekend Anchor/ Reporter for KRBC in Abilene. 

Wanting to get back to the true South, Shelby landed a reporting job at WMGT in Macon, Georgia. After two years of anchoring and reporting in Middle Georgia, she joining the WDEF news team as a Weekend Anchor/Reporter in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There she covered several national stories including the deadly April 27th tornadoes, the shooting-death of a Chattanooga Police Sergeant and the Christmas Day Shooting that injured nine teens. 

Shelby attended Abilene Christian University where she received a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism and Mass Communication, with a minor in sociology. As a student, Shelby worked as an anchor/ reporter for her college news station and a writer/ videographer for her college paper and website.

In her free time Shelby enjoys being outdoors, shopping and cooking southern favorites. She also loves hanging out with friends and spending time with her dog Denzel Washington. When she's not working, you can catch Shelby volunteering with kids, serving with community organizations and staying active with her local church.
