WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Capitol Police in Washington, D.C., say a South Carolina man has been arrested after officers found a 9mm handgun in his bag when he tried to enter the Cannon Building in the capital. Police say 59-year-old Ronald William Prestage of Camden has been charged with carrying a pistol without a license.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Greenville's new police chief is the former top cop of Greensboro, North Carolina.Greenville hired Ken Miller on Wednesday and he will start as police chief in the South Carolina city on Sept. 12.

MCENTIRE JOINT NATIONAL GUARD BASE, S.C. (AP) - Fighter jets from the South Carolina Air National Guard have conducted an air defense exercise over the Columbia and Florence areas. Authorities say the fighter jet pilots were practicing a response to potential airborne threats over the United States.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The number of loggerhead sea turtle nests on the South Carolina coast is down sharply this year but apparently there is no cause for concern. Reports indicate there have been only about 1,700 loggerhead turtle nests recorded this year compared with a record of almost 5,200 a year ago. The nesting season for the threatened turtles ends in mid-August.
