Commission challengers look to defy odds

AUGUSTA,Ga (WJBF) - They're the names on the campaign signs that are not as recognizable, but District Four Challenger Betty Reece, and District 6 Challenger Paul Starett, are trying to beat the odds by beating incumbent commissioners so are voters ready for a change.

They are, they are ready for them to go silently they are suffering that's why I want to be the voice for them," said District 4 challenger Betty Reece, taking on Commissioner Sammie Sias.

"It's not just me that's looking to change that but a number of people who are running get the fact that this opportunity is in front of us," said District 6 Challenger Paul Sterett, taking on Commissioner Ben Hasan.

One of the issues facing the commission is the  location of a new arena.

Reece is one hundred percent behind the regency mall site,

"We need something here they've been promising for years nothing has happened," said Reece.

But Sterett has more questions then answers when it comes to a new arena

We need more information we need more ideas it's not just a one stop these are the two ideas and we have exhausted everything that we've had it's kind of short sighted," said Sterett.

Storm water  is another, issue voters have their sights on Commissioners Sias and Hasan are supporters.

Reece and Sterett both agree a program is needed however not the one currently in place.

"Storm water I know they worked on it for many years, and it's probably necessary but it needs to be revisited I am asking that it be repealed and we start all over the whole process," said Reece.

"I think right now we really need to look at those exemptions mainly because what storm water is billed for is not being done it's not being executed the way it was billed," said Sterett.

Again beating the incumbent is a tougher task then taking on an open seat, and  Cleveland Garrison is another commission candidate challenging an  incubment.
Garrison is  taking on Dennis Williams for the District 2 seat we talked with Garrison  today though he was too busy to take part  in the  story.
