NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WJBF) - The countdown to opening day at SRP Park is on.
Wednesday marked the start of a new era for the Augusta GreenJackets, with the unveiling of a new team identity.
While fans may have to wait 126 more days to catch the inaugural baseball game in North Augusta, it may hold fans over to know they can go stock-up on the newly rebranded team's merchandise.
A new stadium, new team colors and a new logo, but still the same baseball team that the CSRA has supported for 37 years.
The GreenJackets will begin the 2018 season with a new look that reflects the history of this region.
"We've taken what was the former Auggie and revamped him and gave him a new more intense gritty feel." Augusta GreenJackets Vice President Tom Denlinger said. "A few nuisances that are in it, his eyeballs are now in the shape of a golf ball, which we are excited about, and we've debuted the only plaid pattern in all of minor league baseball."
GreenJackets President Jeff Eiseman says rebranding the team was necessary to create a consistent experience for fans at SRP Park.
"One of the challenges we had with the previous brand was that it was heavy on the orange accents," Eiseman told WJBF NewsChannel 6.
Grass and dark green, Augusta gold and black are the new official colors of the GreenJackets, making them the only professional team to use the color-combination and incorporate plaid into their logo.
Eiseman says the new brand flows better with the classic ballpark design.
However, the team's humble beginnings won't be forgotten since the GreenJackets staff plans to display classic memorabilia around the new stadium.
"Some of the Augusta Pirates logo merchandise, some of our early 90's logos and even the logo we have now. So we will continue to honor that heritage," Denlinger told WJBF NewsChannel 6.
"Well I know you'll see it within the parts of the park that the team is operating and controlling." Eiseman said.
A new uniform will be unveiled in early 2018.
If you're wondering about Auggie he's not going anywhere, but fans can expect a new buff Auggie at Opening Day.
