ATLANTA (AP) - Former Georgia Tech quarterback Joe Hamilton was charged with marijuana possession, driving under the influence of alcohol and hit-and-run early today. The charges come less than a week after he was hired as the school's assistant director of player personnel.

Hamilton, who is 31, also was charged with having an open bottle of beer in his sport utility vehicle when he was arrested by Georgia Tech police shortly after midnight. A jail spokesman said Hamilton remains at the Fulton County jail this afternoon.

The alleged hit-and-run collision occurred near the Georgia Tech campus.

Hamilton led the Yellow Jackets to the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference championship and finished second in the 1999 Heisman Trophy balloting.

His new job includes responsibilities in recruiting and serving players' needs.

There was no immediate word if the arrest would jeopardize Hamilton's new job.

Georgia Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich said the matter is under investigation.
