The King’s Academy’s Upper School drama students will perform “Smoke on the Mountain” for the public beginning at 8 p.m. Saturday in the school’s fine arts and athletic facility.
Tickets are available at the door and are $5 for adults, and $3 for students.
The musical comedy is under the direction of Charli Moore, the school’s music teacher, and Gina Llaneza, the school’s drama teacher.
Moore said the idea for having the students perform the play came after seeing the production of “Smoke on the Mountain” at the Florence Little Theatre.
“They did a wonderful job, so we thought we could adapt it well to The King’s Academy’s drama department,” Moore said. “At The King’s Academ,y we love doing spring musicals. Musical comedies are just so much fun to produce and we just really liked the message of “Smoke on the Mountain.”
Llaneza said “Smoke on the Mountain” is a wonderful play that gives the students the opportunity to have fun and fellowship.
The play was written by Connie Ray, with musical arrangements by Mike Craver and Mark Hardwick.
It takes place in 1938 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, N.C., which is located west of Hickory near the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The church anticipates the return of the Sanders Family Singers after a five-year hiatus. In a time of layoffs and a plummeting economy, the Sanderses have been invited by the Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe to provide an uplifting evening of singing and witnessing.
The cast includes Andrew Edmunds as Mervin Oglethorpe; Becky Harrill and Jessie Strickland as June; BK Phillips as Burl; Sara Smith as Vera; Josh Railey as Stanley; Victoria Rosa as Denise; Christian Watts and Ryan Hewitt as Dennis; Emily Saleeby as Maude; and the part of Myrtle is played by Christina Ellerbe.
Students Ashley Herb, Rachel Webster, Ben Lyles, Jimmy Bokelman, Josh Tong and Madison Lee play members of the congregation.
Musicians include Rick Watts, Russell James, Marcel Boggs, Taylor Adams, Elizabeth Anne Jackson and Christian Love.
