Columbia County, GA -- Columbia County's growing...and more people means more pets.
Donna Evans, Columbia County Humane Society: "You will never find enough homes. For every one person born in the U.S., there's 15 dogs and 45 cats born at the same time."
Bob Barker wasn't kidding when he told us we needed to control the pet population...this spay/neuter clinic under construction off Columbia Road will help with that.
Pam Tucker, Columbia County EMA Director: "We are going to start seeing a big problem. This is very timely, and we can't wait to see it completed."
Columbia County has a fully-functioning animal control center, but the kennels stay full and leaders say they always need help.
Tucker: "The unfortunate, heartwrenching part is that we do have to euthanize. There's just not enough homes for them all."
Eventually the Humane Society will open a no-kill shelter on this land.
Evans: "You still want to do adoptions, but spay/neuter's what you want to do. That will stop them from even coming into the shelter."
Another way to keep them out of the shelter is to tag your pets. Animal Control Director Linda Fulmer says they end up with so many animals that they can't reconnect to their owner.
Linda Fulmer, Director, Columbia County Animal Control: "If more people would get a chip or put a collar on 'em with an ID, we could get in touch with them, save them a lot of money, they do have to pay pick-up fees."
In addition to the clinic and shelter, this land may be home to the county's first dog park...one is planned for the back of the 13 acres.
The goal is to open the clinic in September.
