A 29-year-old Columbia County woman who is the face of a lawsuit challenging Georgia’s crackdown on sex offenders will be allowed to stay in her home through Thanksgiving.
   

It is the most talked about runoff this year.  Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss and his opponent Jim Martin will soon hit the polls to see who will take the Georgia Senate seat which is up for grabs.  Saturday Senator Chambliss came through Evans in an effort to get more voters.  WJBF News Channel 6’s Barclay Bishop had a chance to talk with him and has more.

According to Captain Steve Morris, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who tried to rob the Evans Wal-Mart by prying open the Sporting Goods Department cash register.

Critics of Georgia’s crackdown on sex offenders are trying to block the eviction of a 29-year-old woman who is the face of a lawsuit challenging the tough new restrictions.  Lawyers for Wendy Whitaker filed a motion in Columbia County Superior Court today (Friday) urging a judge to block an eviction
scheduled for next week.  Whitaker is on the sex-offender registry for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old classmate when she was 17.

A deadly accident occured at 2:20 a.m. Monday morning in Columbia County. The crash happened at Owens Road and Marty Drive, in Evans.

Advance voting has begun in Richmond and Columbia Counties. Monday, October 27th, marked the beginning of advance voting, and will run through Friday, October 31st. We have a list of locations for you to cast your advance vote.

Columbia County leaders say a penny of each purchase made in their county helps make it what it is today and what it’ll be tomorrow. Voters have a new, $180 million plan to approve. According to Columbia County EMA Director, Pam Tucker, a raccoon was picked up by Columbia County Animal Care and Control on Saturday, October 18th, after a Columbia County Sheriff’s Deputy reported that it was exhibiting signs of rabies. The raccoon was euthanized and sent off for testing by the Columbia County Health Department.

Despite all the trouble on Wall Street and with our banks the brick and mortar continues to go up in Columbia County.  Leaders say they have been responsible with taxpayer money and they offer a quality of life that attracts business to their community.
