AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was set to return to the campaign trail for the first time since losing the vice presidency with a rally for Georgia’s Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
Several thousand supporters were crowding into the James Brown Arena in Augusta this morning to see Palin, who became a celebrity during the race for the White House.
Palin is widely rumored to have an eye on a presidential run in 2012, and Monday’s campaign swing will allow her to flex some political muscle in a state where conservatives have embraced her.
Chambliss is locked in a runoff Tuesday with Democrat Jim Martin in a race that will shape Democrats’ hold on power in Washington. Martin is set to host a state Capitol rally with the rapper Ludacris.
